Dobrota lace

The skill of making Dobrota lace is a protected intangible cultural asset of Montenegro. Dobrota lace was named after the settlement of Dobrota and is a local version of Italian lace, and differs from it in its characteristic motifs, which are mostly geometric and in a more solid way of making. A needle, thread, thimble and scissors are used to make Dobrota lace. The materials used are linen or cotton canvas. Lace is made over paper that is fixed to a firmer base on which a motif is shaped with thread. It takes three to four hours of work to make one smallest simple motif.

The organization of workshops as well as the application of lace on useful objects spreads the awareness of the population about the existence and importance of this skill. This old and significant skill, as an intangible cultural asset of national importance, must be alive in order to maintain that status. By introducing the local population to the basics of the skill of making Dobrota lace, the preservation and life of this important intangible cultural asset continues.
